Brownsville is a charming, and historic, small town in the Mid Willamette Valley, sometimes referred to as “the town that time forgot”. This 1940’s-50’s ambience is what caught the attention of director Rob Reiner when he was searching for a location to film his new movie, Stand By Me. Originally set by author Steven King in Castle Rock, Maine Reiner was so charmed by the town, the people and the reception they got that he changed the locale of the movie to Castle Rock, Oregon.
The town is little changed since the movie crew was here in 1985…the fans are still able to walk the familiar scenes; the green bridge leading into town can feel like a Castle Rock homecoming, a Blue Point Diner sign hangs on Main St. and you can wander up the back alley to the scene of the accidental shot firing. You can pick up a copy of the walking tour at the Linn County historical museum, keeper of all things Stand By Me.
Brownsville is part of the Oregon Film Trail with three signs around town marking key locations from the movie.
Fans come from all over the country-the world even- to see the familiar streets and hear the stories, taste the blueberry pie, try out their best costume and watch the movie every year on July 23rd for the town’s annual celebration; Stand By Me Day. It is like a step back into the past. For more info on Stand By Me Day check the Facebook page “Stand By Me Day July 23rd” or the Museum webpage and scroll down to the Stand By Me page.
